Abolition in Today’s World — police abolition in the context of 2020’s astrology
This workshop series asks and answers the questions: What was happening in the sky when the historical abolition movement was won? Is something similar happening today? How do we steward this moment with care?
You are welcome to register for these as stand-alone workshops or to register for the whole series for fuller learning. These workshops are designed for people interested in collective liberation from all angles. Activists and organizers, astro newbies and professionals, welcome!
Part 1:
This workshop asserts that the U.S. nation is an empire that was birthed, in part, in 1619 with the beginning of chattel slavery. In doing so, we acknowledge the oppression the U.S. was built upon, as well as honor the acts of liberation spearheaded by Black folks, which have also built the nation. Inspiration and leadership for this project comes from public scholar Nikole Hannah-Jones who created the 1619 Project.
We will use 1619 as the base year for the U.S. to understand how we can realize our present and future visions for abolition.
