[2020 horoscopes for each rising sign below]
Dear Earth,
Jupiter in Sagittarius was like soaring through the unimaginable — like this flaming hoop, depicted in the Nine of Keys from the Collective Tarot. We make it through with a combination of will, grace, and sheer faith. What we gain through the experience is immeasurable wisdom. Now, it’s time to stick the landing.
Oh, that landing pad in the bottom left corner? That’s Jupiter in Capricorn.
Jupiter changes signs once a year, now entering Capricorn for the first time in 12 years. As Jupiter switches signs, this is a retrospective on 2019 to see what we have leapt through, and a look ahead to 2020 to see where we need to land.
2019 brought abundance and expansion in many areas of life, particularly whatever part of your chart Jupiter in Sagittarius touched. Abundance is a powerful experience. It can be wonderful, and it can also feel overwhelming or excessive.
So while 2019 brought unexpected delights and gifts, it wasn’t all easy. 2019 was also the year of boundaries. With a stack-up of planets and points in Capricorn (Saturn, Pluto, and the eclipses), we were pushed to learn about boundaries. Dismantling the ones that cause harm by keeping us separate and hierarchical. Setting other boundaries that create the necessary safety to stay centered in ourselves.
All of us, however unwillingly, have internalized domination through our contact with it — whether we have been on the receiving or perpetrating ends of oppression. Whether we learned to bully or we were bullied, the interaction hurt all of us. The intense onslaught of Capricorn energy in the past year may have at times felt as heavy as oppression itself… AND it has also pushed us to discharge the wounds domination have inflicted on us.
We see this playing out on the global scale as mass movements challenge entrenched power systems around our world. We also feel the tug within our own bodies. To express the ways we have been hurt and to let the act of naming heal us. Letting something out is a way to let it go — because then, our psychic energy is no beholden to holding in the pain.
Now, Jupiter entering the Capricorn scene brings some relief to the heavy lessons we’ve been learning. Jupiter here encourages us to build new structures, ones that are more inclusive and meaningful. It reminds us that to build the better world we dream of, this cannot just be a theoretical or future goal. It must be an embodied practice in the way we live day to day. The world is made up of the decisions we make in every moment, here and now.
If we have done the work of facing how hierarchy has harmed us, if we have worked on setting supportive boundaries — then Jupiter will bring some ease and buoyancy in 2020. (If we have not, these themes will become undeniable in 2020 as we receive yet another planetary push to grow.)
As Jupiter moves from Sagittarius to Capricorn, we transition from abundance, adventure, expansion, and divine grace… to focus, containment, and commitment. It is time to prioritize. Time to winnow down from the many things we touched, tried, and talked about in 2019 — and to focus our energies on that which we most believe in.
Jupiter’s usual grandiosity is reigned in by Capricorn. We still have plenty of opportunities to grow, if we commit to it.
What Jupiter in Capricorn seeks is the integration of seemingly disparate energies. Jupiter must learn to merge theory with praxis, to unite prayer with practice. The same goes for us. It will not be enough to vision and be “guided” — we will also have to put our faith to work. If we do, Jupiter ensures we will develop the mastery and enlightenment we seek.
Capricorn activity this year:
Solar eclipse — December 26, 2019
Saturn conjunct Pluto — January 14, 2020
Jupiter conjunct Pluto — April 5 / June 30 / November 13, 2020
The energy may feel a little heavier in December and January with the upcoming transits in Capricorn — I will share more about them as they approach. Soon after these transits, Jupiter will find its footing and help us grow into our goals.
Jupiter will make three conjunctions to Pluto this year. Optimism is met with a cold dose of realism as we are confronted with how unconscious fears get in the way of positive thinking. Specifically, we may take a long look at our survival strategies around control — do we try to exert control over every outcome in our lives? Or perhaps we tend to give our power away because we’re afraid we aren’t capable ourselves. And who has not had fears about taking care of ourselves and making it? Capitalism can be a harsh environment to grow up in.
Ultimately, when Jupiter makes its final conjunction to Pluto, we re-emerge from this psychic exploration a little more released, discovering new ways to own our power.
The planet of abundance promises celebration in the long-run if we put in the effort now.
How can you weave this magic into your life? Book a Year-Ahead Reading and let’s talk!
Aries rising: You have a metaphoric tool belt, Aries, and it’s massive. You are willing to take on challenges, you don’t back down easily, and you know you’re pretty good at winning. With every challenge you take on, you tuck something new into your tool belt. People may envy your strengths, but you know how much energy and drive you pour into what you do. You know that to build a long-standing career requires a combination of risk, courage, and strategy.
This past year, you stretched past your comfort zone and tried out new cultural spaces, mostly with great fun. You also felt the itch to experiment with your work, not interested in growing complacent with the same old things. Some of what you tried may not have worked out (you may have felt your mastery and skillfullness challenged or disregarded— oof). But some of what you tried really did work for you, and 2020 helps you integrate these pieces into your tool belt to share your work with greater success.
In 2020, you will continue learning which aspects of your professional life to let go of, and which new pieces to cultivate. Your ambitions are growing, and Jupiter offers you rewards for your hard work. But you will have to play the long-game, Aries, which isn’t always easy for you. Develop a strategy for what you wish to grow professionally, and practice patience — your work will bear fruit over time.
Taurus rising: 2019 has inspired you to make some changes in your life, like channeling a bolt of lighting and seeing everything differently. No doubt it has felt dramatic within you, and perhaps to others around you as well. You have birthed both inward and outward growth. You may have initiated some new collaborations — that’s the outward. Inwardly, you have begun to experience greater self-understanding of your own psyche and what motivates you. You have also been sensitive to energetic and esoteric healing modalities this year.
In 2020, you are developing a spiritual framework that can ground and contextualize the psychic information you unearthed this past year. This comes with an expansion of your belief system, big enough to incorporate all that you’ve learned in the past decade, and supporting you to share you work more widely. It is spiritual, and it is also practical — for you, the mystical must also be something you can apply for good.
Gemini rising: 2019 brought insights about what you want in partnership, whether we are talking about a romantic partner, professional collaboration, or organizing comrade. You may have commited to a particular relationship this year, and you may now want to invest in this partnership in a concrete way.
2020 is a time when you are considering how to pool resources and share energy with a dear one. This could like working on a project together, or it could look like buying a house. Be thoughtful about how deep you dive. When Jupiter moves through your 8th house of shared resources, it makes sense to step up your investment with each other, but it is also wise to take it step… by… step. Check in and ask yourself: can I say a full-hearted yes to this decision? If not, is there a smaller yet also symbolic step that we can take next.
You may have had some recent losses or separations from people you love, and now you have an opportunity to go deeper with someone else who is dear to you. Go for it, just check that this doesn’t come from a grasping or fear-based place. One of the wonderful things about committed partnership is that it provides security, AND also: you are enough.
Cancer rising: 2019 brought a lot of activity to your embodied existence. You might have enhanced your health regimen. You might have been really busy with work and had to sublimate some of your personal desires to get the job done. All of this activity likely brought some a-ha moments about your work style and what you need for balancing professional and personal wellbeing.
Meanwhile, another balancing act you’re holding is in the realm of relationships. You are learning how to stay in your center even as you prioritize compromise and collaboration. You have been balancing how to care for your partner and care for yourself, trying to not lean too far in either direction that you lose your balance. To do this, you have been shedding some old stories about who you are in relationship, and who your partner is.
In 2020, the attention on relationships continue, but with a little more levity and relief. If you have already been putting in the work in this area of your life, 2020 Jupiter now helps grease the wheels — it doesn’t all have to feel like hard work now. You will have the opportunity to become more of a badass bawse in how you handle relationship matters. Where a relationship cannot continue, Jupiter will help you bring it to an end with respect for one another. Where a relationship wants to deepen, Jupiter helps grow a sense of stability, and a growing confidence in your ability to navigate relationships rooted in your center.
Leo rising: This past year increased your creative (and erotic) energy. More time writing, playing, loving, and/or being with kids. It also brought a lot of focus to the circumstances of your work, because they are changing. You are probably someone who values follow-through and dependability when it comes to your work, but your work is molting, my dear.
Your sense of purpose and how you want to contribute to the world has been shifting. In 2020, you can experiment with how you express your life purpose, and if possible, please don’t let perfectionism get in the way. It may not be easy, for you are beautifully meticulous (um, every presentation you make is fly). But a little room to experiment with new forms will do a lot of good, for you and for the world.
2019 challenged you to let go of certain aspects of your work circumstances. Now, as Jupiter enters this area of life, it brings a little more breathing room as well as connectivity, and helps you set up new work routines and relationships.
Virgo rising: 2019 brought more internal than external expansion. Specifically, you have been growing your home and private life. These are the foundations from which all else grows. The past year took you on an adventure to review your family of origin and your ancestral roots.
Now that you have grown some new roots, in 2020 you begin to extend upwards and out. What would you like to create? Jupiter is moving into the area of your chart where creativity dominates. It governs artistic expression, the erotic, and your relationship to children. As Jupiter enters Capricorn, it brings a stable growth to this area of your life. You feel the joys of creative expression, and you have the opportunity to tend diligently to your creative offspring.
Libra rising: This past year, you have been busy in your local community, taking on multiple roles teaching, sharing, and learning. This activity has helped awaken your sense of purpose! You have been sharing your thinking more, and perhaps also writing more. For you, these are not just thoughts; they are ideas that reflect your spiritual perspective of the world.
Where you might have experienced some limitations is in your home life. Your own early life may have been coming up, and the circumstances of your childhood home may have resurfaced for healing. In 2020, Jupiter in Capricorn continues this exploration, but with more levity.
Give yourself permission to have a quieter, more inwardly focused year in 2020; Jupiter is expanding the focus on your home and your roots. It invites you to return you to your whole self by remembering fallen pieces of your childhood, your family, and your ancestry.
Healing comes from the old English word “haelen” which means a return to wholeness. You are invited to heal the patterns you inherited from your family, to expand beyond these confines, and grow into how you want to make home and family. You are re-telling your origin story.
Scorpio rising: 2019 brought you several professional opportunities. As your work grew, it may have renewed your sense of self-worth as your strengths and skills were affirmed by others and by yourself.
Some of the additions to your work stream have also posed challenges to your day-to-day rhythms, though. 2020 brings more focus and inspiration to setting your daily rituals— from the mundane to the spiritual. Just as you may be gifted with a new task management system or accountability buddy, you are also called to grow your spiritual self by rooting into an everyday practice.
The power of your words is particularly potent right now. Even in the past year, your attention has been drawn to communication: certain old patterns of communicating are ready for an update, and new forms of communication are also emerging for you. You are finding new ways to write, speak, and share your ideas. 2020 offers you the opportunity to stabilize your writing practice and to amplify your voice — if you will commit to this as a daily practice. More than ever, you are able to make your reality with the thoughts and and words you speak.
Sagittarius rising: 2019 found you taking charge of your life, making decisions that centered your wellbeing and taking adventures that advanced your growth. You are growing into yourself, and others are reflecting your light back to you, affirming how much they appreciate your wisdom and perspective.
At the same time, who you are in life may have felt incompatible with how you make a living. Your job may have felt stifling — like it was relying on an old version of yourself, rather than the being you are growing into. If you left your job in 2019 because of this, congratulations. Otherwise, you may be due for a shift.
2020 brings new work opportunities and resources to support you. You will begin to rebuild your sense of self-value as your work better aligns with your personal ethos, because you will get to bring your full magnitude to your job. As you keep experimenting with different forms for how and where you work, you will discover your right relationship to being of service and being a teacher.
One word of caution: you may feel looser with your spending money than usual. Perhaps you will want to invest in a project you are growing. A little goes a long way this year, Sagittarius. It’s a great time to invest a little to get things started, then wait for confirmation that you want to continue before investing more into this new line of work.
Capricorn rising: 2019 was a year of a lot of internal growth. You spent more time alone than you can remember in a long time. At times you may have felt lonely or isolated at times, but it is clear that this time apart from your usual communities has been necessary for your growth. You have faced the dark and survived. You met with your sorrows and listened. You are learning something about your ability to take care of yourself. You may also have used this time behind the scenes to incubate a new project, and/or tend to your inner work.
You now have some idea of what you want to create at this moment in your life. In 2020, Jupiter gives you the nudge to move forward. Jupiter’s transit in Capricorn will be easier for you to navigate than most others, because you are fluent in the language of hard work and gradual building. You have practiced listening to your own voice, and with growing confidence, you are becoming the author of your life.
You are coming out of your chrysalis now. Time spent in your inner world has prepared you to come into the outer world with greater self-knowledge.You are becoming.
Aquarius rising: Your networks expanded this past year. Your communities offered you their trust and investment, and they honored you for the spiritual gifts you bring. In some ways, this might have felt like dancing on the knife’s edge — because while you love community, you also tend to feel a little outside of it, always itching for a bit of space. Jupiter in Sagittarius this past year helped you learn that not only do you contribute to your community, but you also get to be a part of it.
After launching yourself outward, 2020 gives you space to pull back. Some things come to an end, and you are left with more time on your hands. Dedicate this time to your self and your healing. Tend to your emotional wellbeing. We know that inner growth is just as important as outer growth, even if society does not reward us as visibly for it.
Take this precious time to slow down, savor silence, and turn your gaze toward your inner landscape. As Gopal Dayeneni, co-founder of Movement Generation says: “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.”
Pisces rising: 2019 grew your understanding of how you want to make your work in the world. inspired. In 2020, you are invited to apply this toward some long-range planning for your hopes and dreams. Now is the time for step-by-step advancement toward your vision for our world and how you personally want to contribute to it.
The company you have kept has likely shifted in the past year; you are learning to let go of some old community relationships that do not feel resonant with where you’re heading. 2020 introduces you to the friends, networks, and organizations you can collaborate with. Jupiter in your 11th house is in its joy, and you can receive gifts from both your inner and outer circles. People invest in you, like a fairy godmother, benefactor, or patron.
